I’m not sure how I feel about music as an art form because I have conflicting opinions on the musicians that create it. When it comes to music, I believe there are real “Artists,” but there are also a lot of people who are obviously in it for the fame and the money that I find it difficult to label them artists. Beyoncé is one example of this, as she appears to need hundreds of lyricists for songs with very few lyrical variations.
Then there are some musicians with what appears to be little to no actual singing talent, such as Jessica Simpson or the actress who played Hannah Montana in the past. The fact that so many musicians these days don’t appear to write the lyrics themselves bothers me greatly, as it eliminates half the beauty of what art is. When you aren’t even expressing your own thoughts or emotions but rather singing along to a group of writers’ thoughts and emotions, how can you assert that you are an artist?
It’s hard for me to truly appreciate people who call themselves artists but aren’t prepared to examine and articulate who they are. When you consider all the great painters throughout history, a lot of their work was inspired by their ability to convey particular feelings about how they felt, or their thoughts towards a subject or current event. When it comes to music, it is quite obvious to the audience if you are unable to convey your true thoughts regarding the song you are singing or the lyrics that you are singing to.
We recognise when a song’s melody was clearly not written by you, but rather by a team of sound engineers and people with a true ear for music rather than yourself, and we are aware that you don’t sincerely believe what you are singing about. Taking credit for someone else’s work particularly hurts aspiring talents who are regrettably being neglected.
Although this may only seem to be critical of the music industry, there are actually many people that you might classify as true artists. David Bowie is one of those musicians, to provide an example. You know that he actually spent the time writing all the lyrics and hearing every variant of the song itself, even though it is obvious that he did not develop every single instrumental to his songs or play the piano and keyboards personally. In contrast to many artists nowadays who write songs after hearing the instrumental, you could also see that he had an idea of how he wanted the song to sound rather than just creating the song and the words to the melody that he had been provided.
Prince is another individual who might be categorised as an artist since you can see that he not only created the lyrics to all of his songs but also put a lot of thought and effort into the instruments. Because of how talented and dedicated both artists were to their job rather than just doing it for the money and fame, they will both always be recognised as legends.
